Demand forecast for major imported timber 2013
‘Japan Foreign Timber General Supply & Demand Liaison Conference,’ which consists of Japan Lumber Importers’ Association, Japan North American Lumber Conference, Japan Southsea Lumber Conference, Japan Russian Wood Products Association, and Japan New Zealand and Chilean Lumber Conference, has announced demand (shipping) forecast for major imported timber in 2013 (January - December). According to the report, demand for logs in 2013 is estimated to be 4,437,000 cubic meters, which is lower than the estimated shipping volume for 2012 (4,459,000 cubic meters) by 0.5%. Demand for lumber is estimated to be 6,920,000 cubic meters, which is higher than the estimated shipping volume for 2012 (6,770,000 cubic meters) by 2.2%. Total demand for imported logs and lumber in 2013 is expected to increase 1.1% from the previous year to 11,357,000 cubic meters. The demand is estimated to increase slightly, reflecting the housing markets that are expected to keep showing a good condition.
